"Students in primary and secondary schools today represent not only the next space generation but are also critical to Canada's future success in the global marketplace. As a result is imperative that students at a young age have access to learning opportunities and tools that can inspire them to pursue their studies and careers in science and technology and can show them that there are a wide range of opportunities awaiting them in these exciting fields.
Over the course of the past two years, we have had the opportunity to collaborate with the Commission Scolaire Marie-Victorin on a number of occasions through the various activities of our Space Learning Program. We have had the pleasure of meeting and working with a number of your educators and students who have participated in on-site workshops and professional development sessions with us and have been impressed by their enthusiasm regarding space and science education.
It is my pleasure to be here with you today as we begin the next phase of our collaboration. I believe that by exploiting the synergies between our two organizations and leveraging the expertise of our scientists and engineers to compliment that of your educators, this relationship will bear great fruit, particularly for the students, who represent the future of our country."

In the presence of the Honourable Madeleine Dubé, Minister of Education for New Brunswick, representatives of Bonar Law Memorial School and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) signed an agreement on October 14, 2004 identifying the school as the CSA's first official learning partner. The signing ceremony took place before 300 principals during their annual convention in Moncton.
Through this agreement, the Bonar Law Memorial School will act as a beta-test centre, evaluating learning resources produced by CSA before they are distributed nationally. Science and engineering subject-matter experts will mentor high-school students as they take part in a series of learning projects designed for the secondary level. CSA will also work with representatives from Bonar Law Memorial School to develop resources for educators across Canada that will be available through the CSA Web site.
The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is proud to announce that the next instalment of the annual Educator Training Event will be held August 4 to 6, 2009 at the John H. Chapman Space Centre in Longueuil, Quebec. During each day of this three-day conference, educator participants and CSA engineers and scientists will explore space-related, curriculum-relevant topics at the primary and secondary levels. Space farming will be an integral part of long-term space exploration. The Tomatosphere project was created to challenge students to make exciting scientific discoveries. This curriculum-based project for grades 2 to 10 is an experiment involving the germination of seeds designed to teach students about the scientific method. In 2010, we expect to have seeds from the International Space Station plus a control group, for circulation to registered teachers.
To participate, register at www.tomatosphere.org. In March 2010, you will receive 60 seeds for each class registered - 30 of each type. All information about the project is available on line, including teacher's guides in three instruction levels. Because of the generous contributions of our sponsors, there is NO PARTICIPATION FEE, only a minimal cost ($10 to $20) for the peat pots for germination.
