International Year of Astronomy 2009 in Canada

The International Year of Astronomy is a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, highlighted by the 400th anniversary of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilei. In Canada, the Canadian Astronomical Society, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and the Fédération des Astronomes Amateurs du Québec are working together to develop the Canadian activities with participation from the National Research Council and the Canadian Space Agency.

Winterlude in Ottawa

Fascinated by space? Pull on your boots, toque and winter coat and come and enjoy the festivities organized for the 31st edition of Ottawa's Winterlude from February 6 to 22, 2009. This year once again, the Canadian Space Agency will have an information stand in Confederation Park on February 21 and 22 to highlight the missions of astronauts Julie Payette and Bob Thirsk, both scheduled to fly in May 2009, and to answer questions from visitors. The CSA also invites you to come and hear our specialists give two talks on working and living in space.

1st Sargassum patch detected with MERIS in the Northern Atlantic Ocean

This image was aquired by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) instrument on September 4, 2008. It highlights the 1st patch of Sargassum detected with MERIS on the North Atlantic Ocean. Sargassum is floating marine vegetation that absorbs carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and converts it into organic carbon. The patch is nearly 45 km across.
